The Cult Classic That Defined an Era

Known as *Mother 2* in Japan, EarthBound was localized and brought to North America in 1994. Despite a massive marketing campaign by Nintendo featuring the infamous slogan "This game stinks" (complete with scratch-and-sniff advertisements), the game initially sold poorly due to its non-traditional graphics and modern-day setting, contrasting sharply with the medieval fantasy RPGs popular at the time.

Current Collector Market Data (2024-2026 Estimates)

  • Loose Cartridge: $300 - $400 USD
  • Complete in Box (CIB): $2,000 - $3,500 USD
  • Factory Sealed / Graded: $10,000+ USD

Why is it so collectible?

The primary reason for EarthBound's astronomical value is its physical packaging. To justify the game's high retail price upon release, Nintendo packaged it in an oversized box that included a comprehensive, highly detailed strategy guide complete with scratch-and-sniff cards. Because the box was oversized, many retailers had difficulty displaying it, and many consumers threw the large cardboard box away.

Finding an original copy that includes the game cart, the internal tray, the large box in good condition, and the strategy guide with unpeeled scratch-and-sniff cards is incredibly difficult today.
